Promotion of the hobby through damaged or unwanted cents?

I just came from a thread where someone was going to put a somewhat damaged variety back into circulation.

The idea and intent were very noble, however, many posts pointed out certain weaknesses of implementing the actual intent of hoping it would reach someone who cared.

I figured I could go through some of my more common and worn cents and put together sets of 5-10 years or so and distribute them to promising individuals from time to time to promote interest in numismatics, and specifically in the Lincoln cent.

Any thoughts, ideas, or suggestions?

I have a bunch of Cents in my "reject bin" that I routinely spend. Mostly AU or low BU wheats. Hopefully they are appreciated!

Very admirable. I have done that with the Girl and Boy Scouts for years. I have also donated large amounts of varieties to coin shows to give away to young folks. Any way to get coins out to get people interested in the hobby is great and has my complete support. I have had many members here send donations to me to give to the scouts. Over the years, there are about a hundred beneficiaries of the member's generosity. I am aware of quite a few who are still involved in the Young Numismatist (YN) programs.
I think it is great to want to continue to do this. Thanks!!!

I have yet to get as far as being able to donate coins for good purposes, but someday.

I just 1 year ago started collecting cents.But have collected a large number of varieties. suggesting there is still not a shortage of LMC varieties.

I would rather give any extra coins to help someone get started than to put them back into circulation. Last week I helped two ladies in my office start their coin collection by giving them some of my extras. Years ago I gave a lot of used stamps to a young group that was learning about stamp collection. This is a great what you and others are doing.

I think giving some varieties to members is great because it takes it to the next level. Giving a variety to a member is like giving a non-attributed wheat to an 8-10 year old (you have to feed the flame appropriately).

Maybe Brad could promote the site at a few of the larger coin shows in Chicago (especially the ANA next August) and try give out some sets compiled by members. Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts - whoever.

Better yet- Why not do an LCR table at the Chicago ANA??? I believe clubs get very discounted rates and the fee could probably be raised through support of members. We're planning on attending and could dedicate a little of our time to being at the LCR booth- could be ALOT of fun!
