Oil on the surface and surface tension of water will make the water not work too well, just like a drop tries to stay as a drop, it does not cover the area and stay in the lowest spot, on a bigger scale it does work but not well on a really small scale.

Those trail things are interesting, now you need to find them on an unc older cent.

Yes, you are right about the water Ed. It's just like you said, the surface of the coin seemed oily and the water didn't want to stay in one place. But a little Qtip action got it in the right spot and then I could see the water in the incuse area. The alcohol evaporated so fast you couldn't see it.

It would be cool to find another 78D in better condition with these trail lines!

        Interesting thread and images.
I was seeing incuse on most of the images and what was really telling on the last one were the slight pressure ridges showing up on the north and south edges. The metal was being displaced upward and outward as the foriegn item was pressed into the coin?

Viv , from the last pic you took , I see this as an incuse hit. Whatever did this left these marks after the strike. In that last pic there is a preasure ridge at the bottom of each anomaly and this ridge had to happen after the coin was struck.
          Excellent pics !

You are all wrong - It was a vampire trying to turn Abe If you run a tooth pick across the areas in question you will notice if the tip goes up and over the anomalies or drop into them... To me they look incuse... Some times no matter the light angle our eye/brain interconnect does not always work correctly... I know this cause mine does it all the time

does sorta remind me of fang marks

I didn't think about the toothpick trick, but that would work! Thank you Jim! Yes Sir, all votes are in that the anomaly is incuse!

Cool... Thanks for the follow up Vivien... When I saw the image the first thing that came to mind was a sy fi movie - Abraham Lincoln - Vampire Hunter or something along that line
