I believe this is different from the random lines we are talking about on Memorials and Shields that are typically seen in different spots like the date, the bust, at Liberty, sometimes on the reverse in different areas that normally don't cover the entire coin. To me these random lines are light and seem like they are from some kind of polishing pad or brush that the mint is using to spot clean the dies. Just my guess.
Actually, I believe they all come from the same source. But no more spoilers yet. lol.

Very interesting Will! Now I am even more curious to hear about your research and findings on this subject! When will you have the article ready for publishing?

So far I have gotten pics of 3 coins... Here is the first a 1985P... It has both the grooves and plating bubbles going in the same directions... Let me know if you need more pics... I will post the other 2 a little later!!!

Jim that last photo is particularly interesting. This is the typically weakly stuck area but you also have a greasy die strike there also. Awesome. Thanks.

                    1990P with lines!!!

Here is another one for Wills research... This coin also shows the grooves in some areas but the linear bubbles pretty much cover the entire coin... There is heavy die abrasions on both sides... It looks as if the bubbles are pushing the abrasions up and off the coin (separation of the plating from the core) most noticeable on the rev just NE of the memorial!!!

Great images and explanations Jim! I especially like the upside down backwards reverse! I'm getting confused

                          1. We have a Glossary entry for Roller Lines - they used to be confused as Woody's
                          2. Then we have the question about the faint lines that we see at various places on Memorials and Shields (these lines do not cover the entire coin)
                          3. Then we have lines going in the same direction that cover the entire coin that resemble ridges (I thought these were plating related)

My recent question was concerning #2 above. Then the other day I found a greaser (I have a bunch of them) but what struck me is the lines on the greaser reminded me of these faint lines I was asking about in #2. Made me wonder if the issue is grease related?

Thanks, Jim. These coins have broadened the scope of the article. Good stuff.

Nothing fancy like Jim did but this shows six different dates with similar lines. Let me know if you would like larger closeups or full coin shots Will.

I think I found my first one the other day because if you guys. Thanks a LOT!! Actually a local teen did, I let them go through rolls of copper Lincolns I had laying around. (like 6 boxes) Looking for RPM's and DDO's.
I bought a 50 bag of wheats today. should be able to sell for break even after checking them. Mostly 40's and 50's though. Kinda disappointing but I will find something good. Got a neat die break on wheat ear just from a few handfuls.
