9 bank rolls all same date

hello all, went to my credit union today and asked for some penny rolls, usually the teller just grabs them from his/her drawer, this time she had to fill out a piece of paper and retreive them from the back, she gave me one roll from her drawer folded end style, other 9 were machine rolled, got home opened folded end roll, various dates, then first machine roll all same color, first coin 1980d, 2nd coin 1980d, 3rd coin same, about 5th one noticed they were all 1980d, looked at the other rolls ends, reverse one end, obverse other, all with 1980d, so my question is, what would you do? take back or open? is there a better chance of finding a 1980 coin with possible value just do to the quantity 450, or better off taking them back for a more eclectic gamete or possible, varieties, errors, and dates.
is this a common thing to happen? and of all the dates.... 1980??

thanks for any thoughts or suggestions

You might search them for the 80-D/S.

It's been de-bunked that it never was a D/S but it still has value.
I would search the group, keep any on the D/S or any RPMs and a tube of the best 50 coins. Might as well save a full roll of any date you can save. (start an unc roll set). Then cash the rest in.

GreatCollections offers thousands of PCGS, CAC and NGC certified coins and PCGS and PMG certified currency each week in auction.

There are also some RPMs you can look for:

Holy cow!! They look uncirculated! Very cool, hope you find something but as Ed said and has taught me, put you a nice group in a tube. I started what I call the Ed System but have never been lucky enough to run across what you have.

I'd search them. I didnt know about the D/S Ed mentioned. Now I'll have to go back through my 80's again, too.

There is a nice rpm for that date. Always look for doubled dies even if one is not listed. There is a interior die break listed on cudsoncoins. Other than that top of my head don't know.

thanks everyone, i am busting them open, also wanted to show a pre sorting tray i made at my shop on the CNC, and wondering if anyone has any ideas? has anyone seen or make something like this, is it something that people might want or would use? I am making another one that will stack on top for bigger coins, can be made to any size, configuration and for any size coins. numbers can be changed, its a dry erase laminate, any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

Those could be some really nice coins... Those do not appear to be roll paper from 1980 so there could be some different dates buried... I like your set up for the coins... Looks like you took a lot of time to get that all set up!!!

so that being said about the coin roll paper not being from the 80's, do you have a idea of why this has happened? do banks have coin sorters that would pull out all the same date of a coin? the coins are all the same in color, but they still have some nicks and little defects, me being new to this venture, just dont have my head around what the coins have been doing for the last 39 years? any thoughts on what may have happened that these are sitting in a credit union located in a safeway store in Juneau ALaska?

Those are probably original bank rolls. I have had 80-D and 80-P in those wrappers and the same wrappers back at least to the early 70s. They still use them today.

I would think someone turned them in or they did sit in a vault for a long time.

On this subject I think Ed is most likely correct... There is a reason I call him the Edcyclopedia of Coins he knows his stuff... There are coin rolling machines available that will roll up coins just like the banks use to... To the best of my knowledge banks do not roll coins any longer... That is all farmed out to companies like Loomis and Brinks plus others... To me the wrappers on your coins look to clean even for being in a vault for 30+ years but then I have not seen many rolls like that!!!

I know that I've had rolls like that from almost every date back in the 70s and maybe some late 60s.

I know what you are thinking Jim. There is some cut off but it might be in the 60s then they're mostly orange/red/brown/tan.

                          check out 80s rolls:

To answer about the sorting by date - I am not aware of the banks being able to sort by year... They can sort by weight and metal composition tho... The counters and rollers these days are capable of checking weight and metal composition on the fly... If you have ever used a coin star machine that is the newest technology available... That is why foreign coins and under weight coins, especially the almost dead frankenzincs, get rejected... Hope that helps a bit!!!
