Could the high relief be from a reworked proof die??? There was a link to an article of a proof struck on aluminum and it is high relief!!!

It could be, but are proof dies different from business strike other than in the way they are polished? I think they still use the same master hub, don't they? I am actually not sure about practices at this time.

LOL, like Will said in the other post those workers do random things and we are left to wonder why they decided "we need to fix his hair".

It reminds me of the accented hair Kennedy halves, at least there is a story to explain them.
I forget the details but it was something like after he died they quickly made the half dollar with him. Either his wife complained about the hair or they thought she would not like it when they gave her a presentation piece (I forget which) so they fixed it. That made the accented hair Kennedy halves but they only fixed it on some proof dies.

Last night I discovered this 1971S proof that also exhibits some enhancements, but these are raised and therefore the same type of engraving, but on a die rather than a hub.

Incredible that they did the same kind of engraving on both hubs and dies. Fascinating discovery, Jody.

Looks like they polished the die until Abe was clean shaven, and needed to add back at least a bit of stubble.
