I was looking at some small dates on Ebay and the ones I own. They all have the weak details and often heavy polishing lines. Were these possibly re engraved of alternate digit punches cleaned up the weak date? With the die made in Philly, They wouldn't necessarily have engraving tools there at that time. Just an observation and always wondered how this variety came about and only at San Francisco.

Great question. I studied this and believe I know the answer. I'd share it with you, but I wouldn't want George to think I'm being narcissistic. All opinions expressed are not necessarily shared by willbrooks or his affiliates. Knowledge should be shared freely, Will. I'm not jealous of your superior knowledge and perseverance in this field. I, actually, celebrate it. Let it rip.Comment

Anthony, I would like to know what you or others find out about this, it's a very cool variety. LCR shows it better than any other site I've found though.

To quote John Wexler from his awesome Authoritative Reference on Lincoln Cents (2nd Edition)
The class III doubled die he mention is DDO-003, which is listed in the CPG as FS-102. http://varietyvista.com/01b%20LC%20D...970SDDO003.htmOriginally posted by John WexlerIn the beginning of 1970, two different master dies were produced from two different master hubs. The first master die has the characteristics of a smaller date and a mushy LIBERTY and is known as a 1970 SMALL DATE. The second has a larger date and bold, distinct LIBERTY and is known as a 1970 LARGE DATE. Both SMALL and LARGE date working hubs were used to make working dies in 1970. Coins struck from Small Date working dies are much rarer, especially in proof, and command a large premium. One proof working die was hubbed with both a Small and Large date working hub.
My guess is that since San Francisco is furthest away, they made all the Small Date dies first, which happened to go to San Francisco.Last edited by DoubleYou; 01-29-2021, 04:46 PM.Wendell Carper
It's a bird! It's a plane! Aw nuts... It's merely two die scratches!
