I have to say I like it, I know they could have done more and the design is really simplistic, but isn't that what the cent is simplistic?

I'm really glad that they did not pick the flag design.

It could be better. I'll wait and hold judgement until I see how it looks on the coin - at that point I'll either like it or hate it.

i like the design of the shield and the idea, but not cover 25% of it with the "One Cent" ribbon over it.

Lately the mint like to put objects over designs like on some of the state quarters (TX,NY,MA,OH,MN). Plus, with all new designs coming out on coins, put a simple description of what the design is, like "Union Shield"

i bet most people do not know what most of the designs are if asked. Like this year 4 designs for Lincoln's Bicentennial. i bet most are clueless, you should try it ? Snowman

I think it's interesting that the doubled dies today are predominantly class 9's and tend to show up in the center or bulls eye area of the coin, and that there is very little design in the center of this reverse. just an observation.

True. I venture to say that there will undoubtly be doubled dies, even with this design. They may not be very interesting if limited to doubled bars on the shield, but nevertheless fun to collect.

Finally a design that represents the United States and the Union, I agree that it could have been more elaborate. But I agree with Adam less is more and I also will wait and see what it looks like on the Zinc.

I don't think this new reverse is very deserving of being on any coin.
That is my humble opinion. To me it is very plain. There is no touch of art in it. It certainly is not beautiful. What's to admire in it? I could draw it and I cannot draw. Oh well................. mousey

Mousey did you see all of the designs that were in the competition? I agree with you that the CCAC picked one of the more mundane of the choices, but I did not like the idea of the Congress being on a coin, they don't deserve it, I really loved the eagle design and would have picked it myself but who knows what lurks in the collective mind of the committee.

1909 was the last time we had a shield on the US cent...I am really looking forward to seeing a shield on this coin again.
