Interesting Coin | 1983 lincoln cent - dramatic offset die crack on reverse

Just came across this one while trolling EBay. The coin is interesting, but not sure if the price is.

It's not rim to rim, so I would hesitate to call it a retained cud. Big die crack.

It doesn't show if its rim to rim or not. It definitely offset

If it's rim to rim (and I think it has to be) it is a split die struck coin.

Seller says that it runs from above designer initials... but, I guess that could mean it starts above the FG beginning from the rim. With the size of that crack and the offset, one would think that it makes it all the way to the rim above the designer initials. If it were my listing, I would have shown in pics where the darn thing terminates.

For it to be considered a median split die, the crack is supposed to be a certain thickness. Not real sure what the exact criteria is.

Did a little research. It wouldn't be a median split die as that requires the 2 portions to be almost equal in size. This one would be asymmetrical.

I dont think it has to be rim to rim to have movement. I may be wrong.

I see no indication of this being a split die or a retained cud. While there is an indication of the crack being bi-level, this could be caused by the infrastructure of the die collapsing under the die crack.Though dies are made from steel that tend towards being a crystalline formation, there is still some elasticity in that metal which would allow for the substance to bend and create a bi-level crack.

Interesting but definitely not worth the price.

He needs a whole shot of the reverse. Impossible to fully assess without one.

My thoughts exactly. A very interesting coin none the less.
