I've seen this fairly regularly on 1968-D Cents. I agree they're deep clashes that were mostly effaced from the die, but still visible because of their strength.
1966 strong but odd reverse clash

A previously struck dime can and has been struck by cent dies later; I do not see how it could happen in reverse. It just wouldn't make sense on copper planchet, unless by some miracle a copper blank was struck by dime dies and then somehow made its way to the Lincoln cent presses and was re-struck by cent dies, but this scenario doesn't work because the copper blank would not fit into the dime collar to begin with as the blank is too large. And a mule just is not possible, or for that matter a mule clash.

Ok Jason, how'bout a foreign, dime sized, copper planchet that was first struck between dime dies, then made it's way to the cent production lines and was struck as second time by cent dies....
Oh wait, it wouldn't look anything like that. Nevermind.Chris & Charity Welch- LIVEANDIEVARIETIES

Can anyone explain how that could possibly happen?Chris & Charity Welch- LIVEANDIEVARIETIES

How do cent/dime double denominations happen anyway? Is this done with dies? Dies and planchets? I don't have the error book with me to read up on it. I wasn't suggesting this was a mule, but I wondered if somehow a dime was involved at all in the minting process.Rock

I should also say that this particular coin is on a 3 day ebay auction right now and closes in a couple of hours. If anyone thinks its more than just a clash, I suggest you jump in and grab it cheap. LINKRock

The hypothesis for the mule clashes was a Mint worker installing dies of different denominations and purposefully clashing them in 1877. I cannot see that happening again in the 1960s...

Double denominations are from previous struck coins somehow ending up with unstruck blanks and getting struck again by a new die pair. Like a struck dime ending up being overstruck by cent dies. It is a one of a kind event.
