I thought this might be a 'struck through cloth', but I don't really know. It is a Lincoln Cent 1988 Denver, and it has the same appearance on both sides. I know it probably is grease, but I was maybe misinformed when I took the pics. Any advise?
Struck Through What????

The obverse appears to have a similar texture to a coin struck through cloth, but that wouldn't be duplicated on the reverse. The reverse better depicts the many, many contact marks. My perspective says it's a damaged coin, subjected to a parking lot, perhaps put in a paint can and shaken by a mechanical shaker with other coins inside, or any number of other ways beyone what I can imagine. But my call is a confident "post mint damage".Chris & Charity Welch- LIVEANDIEVARIETIES

That is an interesting theory. i am going to look closer at that coin now. It does seem though that the rim would have been much more damaged, and the damage isn't a 'flattened ' look, but seems to be 'equally' distributed on every part of the coin.
I'm going to look now! LOL
I'll get some more pics too, if wanted.

It's been subject to acid. Whether it was dipped or dug up from the ground.“What can be asserted without evidence can also be dismissed without evidence.”Comment

I have to agree with jallengomez. It does have the appearance of acidic erosion. Saw a coin that looked similar to this one in a coin book that had been found in a sewer and it was all ate up like that. I've been known to be wrong before so maybe others will have an idea.BriComment

There is something wrong here. An 88-D that badly damaged (parking lot or acid) would show a lot of zinc. IMO, there are too many sharp corners to be struck through cloth. How about PMD on a 1968-D cent? It that case, it should weigh 3.1 grams. Has it been weighed?Comment

Good observation now we have two reasons for this not being an 88-D. We seem to be sticking with the last 8 however. I think because the head is slightly thinner and the motto is slightly thinner than an 1968, that it is between ODV-024 and ODV-031 (see http://varietyvista.com/Lincoln%20Ce...%20Changes.htm), which is from 1969-1982, which would make it a 1978-D, if the last digit is indeed an 8.Wendell Carper

No Zinc Here
Wow, you guys ARE good. Great observations. I'm sending some more pics of the date for more determination. Any votes for 59D?
Thank you. Thank you.MarkComment
