The mint marks were placed on the working dies. The working dies already had the date on them from the master dies. I do not see how it would even be possible to have a date over the mint mark."If Free Speech stops when someone gets offended, it is not really Free Speech."Comment

Alex, a good number of experts disagree with that 1959-D. Please explain how it could happen. If the D was already on the planchet, it would have been obliterated once the coin was struck with the obverse die, as the field around the date would have been the highest point on that die."If Free Speech stops when someone gets offended, it is not really Free Speech."Comment

Thanks for the info Sean, didn't realize that... True, but they punch the mintmark in.. perhaps it was done "accidently on purpose" and the mintmark was punched in extra hard (on the 1959) but I know it is unlikely, and I doubt that was the case. I can see why the experts disagree with it, and I am pretty neutral.Comment

From the very beginning, I was going to just pass by this post, but the fact that it took two pages of replies made me change my mind.
Do we really need to stretch for possible explanations on some of these? There is basically no way a date could be punched over a mint mark. If you don't understand the minting process, you need to read up on it before you even suggest some of these outlandish possibilities. I have been seeing more and more of this type of guessing going on in the forum. Please folks...before you post possible finds here, at least do some research and ask yourself if it is even possible that some of these things could happen.
I am not discouraging asking the question, but even newbies should be educating themselves...especially on the process of making coins.Bob Piazza
