Error Other | Question on a capped die. Is it a mirror brockage as well?

    Hello again,

I picked this up of eBay recently. It was labeled as a blank planchet which I think kept the price down, but given that the reverse is fully struck, it must be at minimum, a nice capped die.

In hand, I can also make out the faint outline of an inverted reverse memorial image. Does that make this coin more specifically a late state "mirrored brockage?" That's what I think I should call this since the inverted Memorial image can definitely be seen in hand, even though its very hard to see in my photo's (despite many attempts). I believe this coin is dated 1976, but I'm not 100% as the date is barely showing through.

Thanks for looking and for any input in advance.

    John

It could be described as a late stage mirror brockage if you can identify the backward impressions with some certainty. However a full brockage would cover the entire face. Because you can see some of the date, I would be inclined to call this a struck through late stage die cap.

I agree with Bob but would call it mid-stage.

Cool guys! I'm not really into these, but for $5.75, I had to pull the trigger! At least I know what to label it now! Have a great day!

Right or wrong, I would do $5.75 every day. Nice acquisition John.

I hear you, George! Someone else saw it as well, but my bid trumped their's. These seem to go for at least $10 all day long on ebay. This one's unc. or close to it as well. Not a big score, but every little bit helps.

Nice find... That does look like a 1976 - Did you try the old tracing paper and pencil trick to get the date???

I think the faint vertical columns are more likely a ghost image that bled through from the reverse die. It looks to me like this is a generic capped die strike from a mid-stage uniface die cap.
