Error Struck Through | Picked up my first three errors today!

I'm new to collecting cent errors and would like to learn more about the ones I have. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

All appear to be struck through grease, except the mint mark which looks like damage. Try to do one coin per post and please describe what you are seeing.

The 1954S/S is 1954S-1MM-004 MDS (mid-die state) (Information from a error collector on another forum). But thanks for the information and I apologize for not knowing to post each in a different thread.

Welcome to the LCF Blair! I don't blame you for wanting a second opinion on your finds and we are glad you decided to join the forum!

I am not a pro or expert or anything like that, but the reason enamel said this to you about posting each coin separately is because it gets so confusing when different people start commenting and then it becomes difficult to figure out which coin they are referring to. Thanks enamel.

It does look like the first two are struck through grease, just as enamel said. The mint mark on the 54S does look like damage to me also but now that you mentioned it was attributed by another forum, enamel and the other guys who know more about this than I do can help you further.

Congrats on the RPM find Blair! The struck through grease coins are errors. But the RPM is considered a Variety. Here is the definition from the Glossary.

Error: An abnormal coin produced by the mint resulting from a manufacturing defect in the planchet, a post-manufacturing issue with the die, or a mechanical failure of some kind during the strike. Most “mistakes” made to the die DURING its creation, such as re-punched mint marks, and doubled dies, are referred to as die varieties and are NOT considered errors by the numismatic community. The list of errors is lengthy, but include such things like off-center strikes, die clashes, lamination errors, cuds, die cracks and die chips, and misaligned die strikes or double strikes, just to name a few. The most comprehensive list of errors and examples can be seen at error-ref.com.

Question. You said picked up. Did you buy these. If so, please be careful not to overpay for these things.

Yes I bought them but I paid a total of $4.00 for all three and I don't really collect as an investment so if I pay a little more than I should to get what I want... though of course I try not to.

My coin collecting is secondary to my antique document collecting. I have a site devoted to them... kind of an online museum if you will... I don't usually sell them and usually lose money when I do...lol (when I sell them it's usually because I believe they are going to a better home). Even in my coin collecting it's more about the history involved (I have a collection of "El Cazador" 8 reales because of the historical significance of that wreck). I just find the cent errors interesting which is why I am starting to collect them.

That 54-S rpm-4 is a nice example of an RPM because you can't miss it!

Oh yea, I love the story of the coins from that wreck. I think it's name El Cazador means The Hunter???
And a great story of how the dude bought a fishing boat and his wife told him he was making a big mistake so he named the boat "The Mistake" then it snagged a net which might put him out of business but when they hauled in the ripped up net, coins were poring off onto the Mistakes deck because it had been snagged on the wrecked galleon El Cazador.

It's a really cool story and the loss of those coins changed history and since they pulled up about a half million of them they sell pretty reasonably for shipwreck coins!

Cool stuff that doesn't cost a fortune and full of fun!
