I just realized something. That coin had to have started toning on it's way to you. Look at my pictures compared to yours. I don't believe it went in the mail to you like that. Oh well. Again, thanks for looking at it and taking the pictures Jim!Here are the images of your coin... Not only is the coin shiney it is already showing signs of toning... The images are as close to the color of the coin as I could get without touching up the images... It appears this is from a real late die stage... Notice how worn away the bow tie area is... There are no visible abrasions, I can see, from die polishing... Not as much clashing as I thought there was but still nice... I used pointers on the items I could identify... I also created an overlay... I included a image of LIBERTY by itself... Yours looks like a Class 9 across all the verticals of LIBERTY... The west arm of the Y is thicker than the east and RTY is thicker than the rest... Thicker than the 2017 Ps I have seen so far... Hopefully Bob or one of the other pros can chime in to confirm either way... Hope the pics are ok for you!!!Comment

Tom, it does look like the toning started happening after you sent it! Maybe it had something to do with the warm Florida climate? It is pretty toning!
Are you sending it to John Wexler?
I don't recall seeing a Shield cent DDO with a die clash, do you guys? This could be the first Shield Variety/Error Duo!Last edited by VAB2013; 09-30-2017, 01:55 PM.Comment

Yes Viv, I was thinking the same thing. The warm weather in the back of a mail truck could probably do it!Tom, it does look like the toning started happening after you sent it! Maybe it had something to do with the warm Florida climate? It is pretty toning!

I was hoping I could find John Wexler here somewhere. I was asking several folks if he was a member here, no one knew.
I guess I'll have to contact him thru his website.Comment

Toning may not show up in images... It all depends on the light reflections... If lighting is direct then it gets even more difficult... There are a few folks on the LCF than make the toning pop out regardless of how they use the lighting... If there was no toning on the coin prior to you mailing it to me then I am a little concerned that the flip you uses may have PVC in it... The flips I have appear to be the same as yours... I will need to check the manufacturers name... If that is the case I will be throwing my flips in the trash!!!Yes Viv, I was thinking the same thing. Again, I was thinking the same thing about those flips Jim. I know we should be using PVC free flips. When I buy random coins in my travels, many/most are in flips. Over the years, I've just collected them and throw them in the bottom of the draw and pull one out when I need one. There is no way to identify them. They all pretty much look the same. I just throw out about 50 in the trash! From now on, I'll only be using the ones I "know" are PVC free. Live and learn!Toning may not show up in images... It all depends on the light reflections... I read somewhere the PVC makes them soft and pliable. I definitely change anything I question into a Saflip.Again, I was thinking the same thing about those flips Jim. Yikes!!! I just remembered I need to look at all the ones I have stashed away from before I went to Saflips.

The flip you sent your coin in appeared to be new... I did replace it tho due to the adhesive from the tape being kind of adhered to the flip where the coin slid out... Where sure to use acid free tape???Again, I was thinking the same thing about those flips Jim. I know we should be using PVC free flips. When I buy random coins in my travels, many/most are in flips. The results are in. I couldn't have done it without you guys! Thanks go out to each of you!
Hello Tom,
I have processed the coin that you submitted for attribution in a package postmarked October 12, 2017.
The 2017-P Lincoln cent is 2017-P 1¢ WDDO-013 which is a new listing for my files. All of the other things
that you point out such as die chips or die cracks serve merely as die markers for the working die that
produced the doubled die.
Congratulations on the new listing. It will be illustrated on the appropriate page of my website the next
time that I update the site.
If you should decide to send the coin to ANACS to be slabbed with the Wexler File number, be sure to
include a copy of this letter along with the coin.
Good luck with all of your collecting efforts.
Sincerely,
John A. WexlerComment
