I found this just a couple of hours after Viv posted here 83P coin. It looks like there are lathe lines across Abe's face and then just circular abrasions elsewhere.
Not sure Jon, my first thought is die polishing because from this view the circular lines look somewhat broken and irregular. Here's one of Jason's to compare yours to and see what you think. http://www.errorvariety.com/Lathe-li...1cDDR-001.html

Thanks for checking it out Viv!! I don't know for sure but I really think both are happening here. Not much happening in the fields except polishing lines but look closely at the lines on the face, especially in front of the eye and on the bridge of the nose. Compare it to this listing that has them in a similar place. (http://www.errorvariety.com/Lathe-lines/91PLL001.html) I did not know if the devices maybe skew the consistent lines or maybe even plating issues.
I don't know now, doing a little studying and it's looking like you may be right. I think I need to take a lesson from Rowdy's playbook and study before I open my mouth and start posting pics! It looks like I can see the center but don't think it is as uniform as the lathe center should be. See what you think...

Aww Jon you are fine to ask these questions, we all learn from it! I can barely see the circle... too much light maybe?
That's my point Viv, I think you are right. Mine does not look quite right for the lathe lines. Your right, I'm wrong, your better looking, I'm stupid, your smart...… Hah! I've used this before but it's so good!!

too funny... love that movie! I think we are both on track here, otherwise THE big dawgs who have already seen your thread would have responded otherwise. Sometimes I think those big dawgs read... and wait to see if we can figure it out on our own!

I agree with that but also now it's usually a sign I have miss-stepped and am waiting for the other shoe to fall...

Got not issue with that, just trying to learn.
Please don't feel that way Jon, it's all part of figuring things out and learning, not a thing wrong with that. If we were wrong about this you can bet that one or more of THE big dawgs below who have read your thread would have already jumped in and saved us!

I think we are on the correct rack... Take a look at the big dawgs that have looked at this thread... Look at the box titled "Members who have read this thread:"... One thing to remember about lathe lines - technically they are a line - On Jasons image http://www.errorvariety.com/Lathe-lines/10LL001.html start at the outside end of the line and follow it in and you will see it is an unbroken line to the inside end... On your coin I think they are all lathe lines... The lathe process is all done in 1 step beginning to end at 1 speed so the lines are evenly spaced... A polishing process is rarely, if at all, completed in a single step in order to prevent over polishing which could damage the surface... Hope that helps a bit!!!
Added - If I'm wrong the big dawgs are sure to chime in!!!
Jim (A.K.A. Elmer Fudd) Be verwy verwy quiet... I'm hunting coins!!! Good Hunting!!!
Look at the box titled "Members who have read this thread:"... !
Only moderators can see that, Jim.

Thanks for checking it out Jim!! I've looked at this coin several times and compared to Jason's examples. It would appear to not follow the normal rules of the lathe lines but I feel that's what they are too. I saw the link for submitting, is he taking submissions of lathe examples? I was not sure where he was not taking submissions on clashes.
