70s small date?

Im still not sure.. isnt the curve in the loop of the "9" supposed to point in the middle of the "7"?Comment
-
The 9 appears correct for a small date. Large dates will have a blunted end, where small dates will have a pointed end.Comment

Here is the levelness I was seeing... would be good to see the LIBERTY.Attached FilesLast edited by Guest; 12-09-2012, 12:43 AM.Comment

This is a proof coin, it isn't likely to have a heavy contact mark.Chris & Charity Welch- LIVEANDIEVARIETIES

1970 'S' Small Date?
Good one! In identifying this species, I look solely at the terminus of the nine's upper swirl. The tip's trajectory tells you everything you need to know when attempting to solve the, "Small Date / Large Date" question. If you scribe a line with your mind's eye heading east from the upper tip of your nine and find that it's plummetting toward the MM,...you're out. But if your imaginary line follows a natural course that cuts through the lower stem of the seven next door,...you're in. The difference between the nines is actually quite dramatic. Congrats!Comment

Good call Jackmacblack! This is also the main place I look to distinguish these as well.Good one! In identifying this species, I look solely at the terminus of the nine's upper swirl. While there are many differences between the '70-S small and large dates, I think the above diagnostic is the easiest to see quickly.Comment

Roger, you need to make the photo comparison smaller. I can still almost see it.

Again, is is just hard to believe how many times we see a 1970-S and there is some difficulty in making the small/large date call. The predominant suggestion above, which I agree with , is that it is a small date. Nice find!

I used to have trouble with the difference and eventually became more and more in tuned to the difference to a point that i could easily make the distinction between the 2 with just a quick look..........except last week. I found a circulated 1970-S that I couldn't dismiss as a LG date but just couldn't be convinced it was a sm date either. I soaked it in distilled water for 24 hrs and put it under the scope. I almost took a photo, ready to post it......until i turned it upside down and it all became all so clear again. For some reason I couldn't see what was plain and simple right side up. Turn it around and there it was. A lousy circulated large date. Funny how bad eye sight, misperception and brain farts can slow down the search sometimes.Rock
