A rarity in the donation box

Today I was at the grocery store and spotted a wheatback in one of those clear, plastic donation boxes. You know the ones, they have a lock and the only opening is a tiny slit for coins. Then it occurred to me, what if there was a 1983 DDR #1 sitting in there?

Here's my question: what would you do if you saw a true rarity sitting in one of those donation boxes, like a 1984 double ear, or a 1972 DDO #1? Would you ask for the box to be opened so you could have the penny? Would you let it go, knowing you might have just passed up a few hundred dollars?

I'd offer a $20 donation or whatever for that single penny, and I'd get it!!

I've already yanked a 98 WAM out of the give/take-a-penny cup. I always throw a quarter or whatever I have in my pocket into the dish. If i see wheats, I always grab them and exchange with a penny from my pocket. Money is money, right?

Most of the time if its a donation jar that is locked, only the charity can open it. The store has nothing to do with it at all. Just helping by sitting it on their counter.

My son found his 1st 1999 WAM in a give a penny-take a penny tray at a gas station a couple of years ago.

If this occurred in Brooklyn I'm not sure I would be able to inquire without causing a stir; and $5-20 sounds like a good idea. Unfortunately these bodegas around me are not the best places to have such conversations...

I think Chris would get the penny by offering an incentive for somebody to open the box..anything else would probably be laughed off or treated with suspicion.

I would go into a mad burst of outrage over the fact that pennies were being locked away in such a torturous environment, and then threaten to sue them for the crime of defacing currency, unless of course they allowed me to buy the container for like $25 so I could set them free from aforementioned shameful habitat.

                            Eh, not really....

ha! what a thought! I haven't thought about that one yet, however I would probably ask for sure to have them open it... then offer to sell it and then donate the money to that charity. I am more careful now however with all of my change, even if I give the local homeless guys some money... it's also bills now... I am temped to buy the change they collect off them too! lol
