    Post Office Strikes Again

Well, the post office made off with some coins. I shipped some stuff to Chris in a trade. Somewhere along the line (last postal scan is here in Austin), they repackaged my MEDIUM FR Box into a LARGE FR Box, cut the labels off and affixed them to the new box...but they "accidentally" only put 1/2 of the contents into the box before sending it the rest of the way to Chris. I used a ridiculous amount of tape on the box too. Something smells fishy.

We'll see what they have to say this morning. Chris is headed to his PO today too to see what they say on his end.

I hope they are nice to me because I am pretty upset.

That's creepy. I assume you have called the 800 number and are complaining to no end. Sorry, and good luck sorting it out.

No damage notice with the box when delivered Steve?

Just try mailing a box like that and they would throw it back in your face.

Chris picked it up with some other stuff and didn't really take a look at it (I assume) until he got home. He called initially asking about the other half of the stuff we traded and then noticed all the problems with the package. I spoke to a postal inspector this morning and they are actually looking into it. When I explained everything he said there is a good chance the missing brick is at a sort facility somewhere, that it got separated when/if the box busted open and they just couldn't find the package it belonged to. Because of the weight of a brick, it could have easily worked its way to the bottom of a pile at the end of a conveyor and been nowhere hear the rest of the package when the package was discovered. Seems loosely plausible I suppose. I killed the guy with kindness so I'm hoping he follows through on his search.

        We shall see said...

I'd agree Steve, but every time I've had a package damaged in transit (there have been many), they throw it in a plastic mail bin, tape over the top of it and place a big "damaged in transit" notice on it, they don't repackage it in the wrong sized box using their own packing material...

Guess what, I just recieved a package that was repacked in the next largest size. I think postal workers might vary in their methods. Mine did say damaged on the original box, which was inside the bigger box.

How disappointing, I hope they resolve the issue for you. Kudos to you for keeping calm that's hard to do in situations like these.

I have had so many problems with the post office, I always insure everything. And now since the prices have gone up for regular parcel post, sometimes I will use a different courier. On the west coast we have Norco Overnight that gets it delivered the next day for the same price with peace of mind. (but it has to be within their delivery destinations) Delivery companies regardless of who you use, have a percentage of lost damaged or stolen packages, so I try to use the one with the best tracking and customer service.

              Good luck to you!

It's amazing how some things work. I have been in the business of uying, selling and attributing for 15 years, and have had many thousands of packages sent and received. The number of damaged or lost mail I can count on one hand. Meanwhile I have heard horror stories like this one. It is strange indeed.

I filed a report with a helpful postal inspector today, he said it would be forwarded to the postmaster general and took down my number.... I'm holding my breath.

I work at a shipping department of a medical/air sampling business.....our lost/damaged/missing log is very small...
                        50% to 70% UPS... 1% to 2%
                        20% to 30% FED EX...less than 1%
10% to 12% FED EX Freight...3%(working on this)
remaining balance various Semi truck companies,USPS,DHL....less than 1%
we ship samples listed as $1 to $40,000.00 oversea orders...
anonymous ... stealth... when I ship a coin... I put coin wrapped in cardboard in a box...then in another Box..
There are NO guarantees anymore.. have the tracking numbers...(I use parcel post with a tracking number from work) talk to local branch.. then escalate it to ask for post master of local office.. then up.up.up...check if they are to repackage?...check and ask when it was re-boxed...do they have a camera? who did it?....ask and push NICELY...

There's a utube video of a box at a shipping facility. The box is going up a conveyor belt but it's heavy so it gets halfway up and rolls down. It stays that way going up and rolling down. I can imagine if there's a brick of coins and any way for it to move that it will be like a battering ram to destroy a box.

I've only had one re-boxed/bagged item. It was a group of OBWs that someone sent in a flat rate envelope. They delivered it in a clear bag with a note saying damaged. Inside was the mutilated wet flat rate envelope and a bunch of OBWs and a few rolls worth coins from ones that opened. All the coins made it and seemed ok other than some bag marks.

I've lost many of my coins in the mail. They never send them back in a "damaged in transit" envelope like Chris mentioned.
Only once did they use it. Now if my name was on the envelope...why didn't I get notified my items were lost???
Hope things worked out okay for you two.

I have never in my entire life had anything I have ever sent through the USPS lost or delayed. Never, ever, ever. The only thing that has ever gotten lost for me is my tenants' rent checks every single month, without fail, every single stinking month. lol.
