Well, I haven't been collecting varieties very long! (2/11/11) But here is the story. I ran accross a linclon cent that had a linear plating bubble that ran from God in motto through Linclon and to the date. I promptly named it:
"God spears Linclon" I then googled for resource to find if there was a collectible value for it and found Linclon Cent Resource website. I then contacted Brad who emailed me suggesting I post on forum and see what you guys thought. PS, so blame Brad for my present annoyance of everyone.
You guys, quickly spotted the coin as possibibly plating issue. But I was able to sell tha coin for 50.00 to a local collector. He loved it. I spent that money on a bag of 5,000coins from my sister's spin machine at the bank. With hopes of finding another sweet sell. I sold most of my morgan dollars to a friend and decided to go penny hunting.LOL
Here is a picture of my best find. Hidden behind it is all the help I have needed to make this quest a success.

As many of you know, early this year every coin that had MD, was a potential double die to me. LOL Every 92, 98,99,00 I turn over I expect to see wide ad close am's I am looking for and have found a few. Some really great coins i have been blessed to find.(Now 22 of the 2011p-1do-004s).
But none have as much a part in changing how I waste my time as the "God Speared Linclon Cent.

Thanks for starting this awesome thread Chris!
While I had been aware of varieties for many years, I didn't become very serious about searching for them myself until 3 or 4 years ago. I started small by simply buying 10$ worth of cents at my local BofA every few weeks. I remember those rolls taking hours to go through because I had no idea what I was doing. I always had this sneaking suspicion that I was missing a lot of good stuff and I am certain now that I was right. Sure, I could recognize the wheat cents, blank planchets, clips, etc... But, if you handed me an rpm or a doubled die, I would have looked right passed it.
Right about that time, my girlfriend was awesome enough to buy me a Cherrypickers guide. Once I began reading that, I was blown away by just how many cool varieties were out there, most of which, I had never heard of! For whatever reason, I remember seeing a picture of the 1968-D doubled die reverse and thinking what a cool coin that would be to find. As luck would have it, I actually found one after only checking maybe 100 1968-D cents! I still remember the thrill of that! First, the actual realization that something didn't look right. Then, recognizing split serf's and extra thickness on the devices for the first time! Finally, this led to discovering Coppercoins and how to start matching up die markers. It was a find that I will never forget and I have probably spent dozens of hours studying just that coin alone! Of course, I have checked many thousands of 1968-D's since then with great enthusiasm only to come up empty
.
I feel that finding that coin so early in my searching career was a true blessing. It gave me the motivation to keep searching even with weeks between good finds. Then, with each new discovery, my confidence and skills grew. Now, I am certainly hooked for life and enjoy collecting coins more than I ever dreamed possible a few short years ago
. Sharing and seeing the amazing stuff we all come up with on this site just adds to the fun and I thank you all for creating such a wonderful community. Good luck to all of you!

Great bump, Brad. I, for one, have found the search tool is an incredible source of information. As for me, my greatest find is every morning when I locate my keys.Last edited by willbrooks; 04-29-2012, 06:05 PM.All opinions expressed are not necessarily shared by willbrooks or his affiliates. For me, I have many best finds. No matter how strong or weak a doubled die is, you just get this feeling when you find one. I compare it to deer hunting. You spend a lot of time looking, somedays you don't see anything then you find one. It may be a little one, but you know that someday it could be a big one. So you keep hunting.
The best money maker find was about 15 years ago when a young lady who used to work for me called me. She was working at a bank in a small town and someone had brought in some rolls of silver.Their mother had died and they found the rolls in the attic. She told me to hurry. When I arrived all that was left were dimes, all the quarters and halves were gone. So I purchased 60 rolls of silver dimes for face value. When I got home, most of the rolls were BU 1946 rosies. There were some later years as well. I found some ddo's and ddr's and a few rpms. but made most of the money selling the BU rolls. To this day i wish I had made it there earlier!!
The weirdest coin I found was a two headed nickel. I will post some pictures later in the week. My back is killing me so I am recliner bound!!Comment

As a kid, my friend's and I would get permission to ransack old farm houses in Northeastern PA...
I found a small mason jar full of pennies in a false wall - that was put on the back burner because we also found an 1859 Cadet training sword from anapolis, AND a Colt Baby Dragoon (rusted solid). The thing I remember most about that day was the gold wire wrap on the hilt of that sword shined as bright as the day it was made... amazing...
Anyhoo - about five days later I went through that mason jar.
I found an AU 1909-s VDB...
I *WISH* I still had it.
but...
I traded it for a BIG pile of silver when those hoyt (?) brothers jacked the silver prices in 1980 (?)...
Memory fails.
I remember that the book on the vdb coin was $537.00 in AU...
to a 15 year old kid - THAT was alotta money!
I sold the silver for $800 a week later...
ergh...
shoulda, woulda, coulda...Comment
