2015P odd lines
This is what I was referring to and thought Viv was too.Comment

Yep that's it Jon. The LED lights really bring these lines out if they are faint on the coin. Mostly seen at the date and the bottom of the bust, but can be anywhere. These same lines are also on Memorials but not as easy to see if circulated.
This is a confusing thing and I kinda gave up on it some time ago, but it didn't stop bugging me so I'm glad you guys have brought it up again.
This is what I'm wondering about Jim's coin above. I'm not sure and he knows more than I do, but roller lines that I remember seeing are not as grooved in as much as Jim's example - his seems more like a plating issue than roller lines (but the roller could cause both things to happen - lines and grooves?) The roller lines I remember had a color to them that was very visible (that was the difference to see between roller lines and a woody, because some of those were called woody's but they were actually roller lines)
These faint and sometimes not faint lines we are seeing on Shields and Memorials don't seem to be related to roller lines to me because roller lines covered a larger area and are more pronounced. When I first started paying attention to these lines was when I was really tuning in to die flow lines, then I saw these other lines that were not going in the same direction of the die flow lines and I was thinking "what the heck is this"???Last edited by VAB2013; 02-02-2019, 11:13 AM.Comment

Like these roller lines have a color to them, this example has wide lines, sometimes they are thinner. I have some of these stashed away and I remember Will posting one that his wife found that was a really good example. Let me see if I can find that one.

Nice ones Jon... Those are the type of lines that were Cliffs 83Ps... I found 7 LCs with these types of lines... Here are a couple of pics... I do not think they are roller lines tho??? They look more like abrasions??? There are die flow lines in both pics... The jacket corner has some lines in the field as well as the lines running in a different direction... The scroll only has the lines on the scroll itself... I do have more pics but they are not ready yet!!!Jim

2018P with lines
Here is a 2018P with the lines on both sides... I did a full obv and rev along with a side by side for now... The lines are visible near the VDB and on the rev the south side of the shield... One thing I have noticed with all the coins I have found with these lines are that the areas with lines also appear to have been grazed making that area appear lighter under direct lighting... Some coins even look slightly flattened... I will be more than happy to get more pics if needed!!!Jim

Corrosion accentuating the striations, similar to Jim's 1995. Very nice looking tones to go along with the striations!! You agree that this is a different cause than the others we have posted though, correct?Comment

Jon, I'm not sure but I think Will's Lincoln in Post #12 has plating disturbance. I believe this is different from the random lines we are talking about on Memorials and Shields that are typically seen in different spots like the date, the bust, at Liberty, sometimes on the reverse in different areas that normally don't cover the entire coin. To me these random lines are light and seem like they are from some kind of polishing pad or brush that the mint is using to spot clean the dies. Just my guess.Comment
