The keyways were used as alignment keys during the hubbing process. If the keyways began to wear with use, it could indeed lead to a small misalignment, especially considering how much pressure is used. There was a point in the process when keyways were supposedly eliminated. However, the instances of doubled dies increased and they went back to using them. I so not know much more about that issue. Take a look at this photo from John Wexler's site and you can see the keyways I am talking about.

Thank you Bob!! Great explanation and thanks for the link that clearly shows the method used for alignment. I suppose in my mind, I imagined a major misalignment but in reality, as you said it takes very little to make the difference we see on doubled dies.

Thanks for starting this thread Viv!! It has made me dig into many things I have not taken time to learn and explained much of what I did not know. Thanks Will, Bob and Viv for all of your input and guidance. I don't say it enough but appreciate you and all the others that make this forum a great place to share and learn.

You are absolutely correct Viv. I was actually unaware of this. Thanks for educating me!

I should add that Viv absolutely amazes me. I admire her grasp of the minting process and her attribution skills. Thanks, Viv, for all the help you give to all of us.
It seems to me you have already contributed!!!

What is strange about that is the zinc just like the old copper alloy are in block form... After rolling the block out into sheet form the metal becomes harder and brittle... I would have thought a quick annealing would have occurred prior to the blanks being punched out???

Thanks, Jim. It is very kind of you to say that, but for the life of me, I don't know how.

It took me a bit to figure out what you are referring to. I do remember now, though. But I'm not so sure that counts since I had just read the info before that post. It's hard for anyone to remember everything. At any rate, I thank you!!

It does count... It shows you are researching, remembering what you learn and able to correct some one with references to the appropriate material... Like you said no one can remember everything and that's where help from others comes in so that we can be correct... Keep up the excellent work!!!
