    Jay- there's something you're forgetting.

Banks are privately owned enterprises. They can do anything they want within the perameters of the law. If they don't like your nose hair they can close your account, hand you your money and tell you never to darken their door again.

Society seems to have this sense of entitlement that I don't understand.

If I walked into my bank and they told me they do not accept hand rolled change I would say ok, go home and dump them in a bag and bring them the next day. I am not sure I am seeing the problem.

had a problem getting half dollars...went to 4 different B.O.A.'s...all said"we don't order half from the fed's....I found another bank that would get them...went back to B.O.A. told them I'm closing my acct. because of the problem....they then said NOOOOO PROBLEM...had to buy 2 $500.00 boxes....I searched the boxes... then went around town putting $250.00 into my acct. at each B.O.A. I could find...spread it around $20.00 each bank at a time...

I would just find another bank. I have a personal checking and savings, as well as a business checking and savings, as well as investment accounts made through the bank. If my bank told me what they told you, I would close my accounts immediately and find another bank.

True you would think they would spell out the limitations of what you can and cant cash in with a written form. I think people like me who walk in without an account was the reason they started to charge the 6% for non customers.

This was nothing more than miscommunication between the bank and I. Noone informed me that the policy of the bank was changed. If I knew the rules of the game changed I would have opened up the wrappers dumped them in the bucket and came in with 50.00 shots over a few days. The other thing I keep in mind is how busy is the place. Is there alot of people who are trying to cash checks? Is there a line for the machine to cash in coins? If the answer is yes then I would have been like ill come back ( as much as I would hate to do so) but on a quiet day and being told you can do the coins here if you like....

Thats the difference in how I do things. if I know good and well that Im gonna be abusing their machines with over 350.00 in pennies I break it up. If I go in thinking Im cashing in my pennies that are rolled up in boxes and I have no reason to expect them NOT to take them then I bring in the whole kitty litterbox in. The manager is partly to blame that I worked on the coins there cause he said if you wanna work on them on the side and such you may do so since I hand trucked all the boxes in. Sarcasm or not, dont make that offer if you dont intend on a customer doing that.

I think Chris people as a whole are more me me me, and need stuff spelled out for them. Your right that technically you can take your business elsewhere. but Now I know that they dont take hand rolled coins I wont have this problem again. ( Since I know what their policy actually is ).

I found if my son takes the coins into the TDK bank in containers (coffee cans or tupperware) and has an account there, no problem. They will not accept rolled coins which I thought was doing them a favor. The issue is the coin machines they use will only hold 50 dollars in pennies at a clip in the plastic bags they go into when pouring into the machine. They then have to change the bag which is a pain in the a** for them. We asked if we could buy some bags already completed and they said no, have to go to the fed for re-distribution. So we get the bricks at other banks (Wells Fargo) have accounts there, and take them to the TDK who has the counting machine, no real issues. The Wells Fargo people have no problem as long as we don't bring the pennies back that we got there. TDK seems to have no problem with younger people bringing the coins in. Also found if you go to the bank and no cars in the lot, they are more willing to help out. If the bank is crowded, I would come back later.

They must have some dinky counting machines. I've already taken $200+ to my bank and never had a bag change out on me. They even come over and ask if I need help, and I ask if they can replace the bag before I start the process so it doesn't jam up their machine.

TDK so not one of the biggies. We are just happy to find a place that does it for no charge.

A funny thing happened on the way to the forum......
Anyway, I finally decided to go to my little bank and get one brick of Lincolns to search. It's been long time and my little bro Roger says to get back in the game.
So I go and cash a check and ask for a brick. The tellers have to open the vault get a brick. The young lady came back and gave me the brick, asked if home rolled was okay, and I said yes. Then I opened the box. Oh my!
It was a full box of home wrapped 2009 P Formative Years Lincolns!!! Wow! I could not believe it. And the box was not marked with my usual large black X. We opened a roll or two and I was getting so excited thinking someone had brought these in and was going to take them home. That is UNTIL the young lady said, "do you mark the rolls like this?", pointing at the HT in small penciled letters. It is my way of marking Heads Tails on rolls that I know are P or D but you can only see the tails.
DARN!! Would you believe this is a box I must have traded in about two years ago????
With that, we traded boxes again and I brought home an armored car box of circulated coins that had nothing of value except one dime, two Canadian Cents, six cruddy wheats and about four dozen coppers to hoard.

Which brings me to the question... where are all the coppers going??? And, are we going to lose our pennies like I heard Canada is doing?

Thanx Bunches everyone for listening to my ranting, again.

I'm sorry to hear about your dilemma. Is there another bank that don't have a problem with you exchanging pennies?

How crazy is that to get your box back from two years earlier! (Was it dusty?)
I got a sealed box from brinks without one red copper cent in it. Go figure.

I'm actually starting wonder if I should be setting aside all the copper I put back into circulation. On a guess I'd say that 50% of the cents I search are copper. I've heard of people making some profit selling these in bulk, but don't know if it's really worth the effort. Might have to think this over.

I consider myself VERY lucky to have two sources for as much coin as I desire. I get $50 bags from a friend who works at a USB branch, and rolls from my Credit Union. Some weeks I go through 7,500 cents and there are always more there waiting for me. Sorry to hear about your dilema. Bill

I'd definitely reccommend it Bill, I'll bet you my inventory that in a matter of less than a decade it'll prove to be a far better investment than any mutual fund or bond. Tangibles have always been my preference and although there's a lot of copper out there still, they're not of course making any more. How many situations offer you the chance to PROFIT 220% (at today's prices if you could melt it) instantly? The premium is still small, about 40 cents on the dollar by the bag, but if you've got a few years, it will unquestionably pay off.

As much as I'd love to tell you to keep dumping them back in circulation, I couldn't do so in good faith. If you have them, keep them. There are people all across the country buying them up.
